VOTE PALESTINE SURVEY OF PARTY POSITIONS ON PALESTINE

Vote Palestine is a non-partisan grassroots campaign aimed at engaging, educating and mobilizing Canadian voters to include justice for Palestine as one of their key election issues. As voters from coast to coast, we want to see Canada adopt a human rights based approach to its policies on Palestine.

The Vote Palestine platform outlines the minimum demands Canadians are seeking from aspiring MPs and their parties. These demands are generated from widely-supported campaigns, and represent the views on Palestine held by a majority of Canadians. It is no longer enough for Canada to use the language of support for a two-state solution. Voters are looking for elected representatives that will have the courage to take concrete measures to support freedom and justice for Palestinians.

This survey is being sent to the main federal political parties so voters can better understand the parties’ positions on Palestine. We ask that the survey’s four questions be completed by September 10, 2021 so voters will have an opportunity to review the responses submitted.

Does your party support a ban on exchanging goods and services from illegal Israeli settlements?

END THE TRADE OF GOODS AND SERVICES FROM ISRAELI SETTLEMENTS Although Canadian policy officially opposes illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territory, we continue to maintain a trade agreement with Israel that encourages settlement expansions and allows for the free flow of settlement goods and services into our country. Actions sought include: Ban the trade of goods and services from Israeli settlements. End all forms of economic, military, and academic cooperation with Israeli settlements. Revoke the charitable status of Canadian charities which are found to materially support the Israeli military, settlements or occupation.

Does your party support suspending all bilateral trade of weapons and military services with Israel until it complies with international law?

END MILITARY TRADE AND COOPERATION WITH ISRAEL Canada recognises the 54 year long Israeli military occupation as illegal. In 2021 alone, more than 300 Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli military. Canada is sadly complicit in these crimes through the weapons trade. Actions sought include: Cancel the drone contract with Israeli weapons company Elbit Systems End Israeli military recruitment in Canada by enforcing the Canadian Foreign Enlistment Act Suspend all bilateral trade of weapons and military services with Israel until it complies with international law.

Will your party support Palestinian efforts to seek redress at the International Criminal Court (ICC); and push the government to vote in support of all UN resolutions upholding Palestinian human rights?

UPHOLD INTERNATIONAL LAW FOR PALESTINIANS Ever since the Martin government, Canada has been part of a tiny bloc at the United Nations that systematically votes against resolutions in support of Palestinian human rights. In 2019 and 2020, Canada took a small step in the right direction by supporting 1 out of 16 of these resolutions. Actions sought include: Use economic and diplomatic tools to pressure the Israeli government to immediately end the occupation and lift the siege on Gaza. Recognize the State of Palestine and support its efforts to seek redress at the International Criminal Court (ICC). Vote in support of all UN resolutions which aim to uphold Palestinian human rights.

PROTECT FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION ON PALESTINE Israel and its supporters are waging a campaign in Canada to delegitimize Palestinians by falsely accusing them of antisemitism. They are relying on the widely-discredited and controversial International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance working definition of antisemitism. Actions sought include: Respect the right of Canadians to support the Palestinian boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) movement, as non-violent tools of resistance and protected forms of expression. Reject the IHRA definition of antisemitism, and commit to fighting antisemitism without conflating it with criticism of Israel, and without undermining free expression, academic research and activism for Palestinian human rights.
